Once upon a time in America, marriage was the norm for adults. But now, for the first time since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking these numbers, there are more single Americans than people who are married.
As a demographic category, Single people in the US are growing faster than Married, a trend that has continued uninterrupted since 1960. In fact, Singles now outnumber married adults! In 2011 there were 102.1 million singles in America, that represented 44.1% of all US residents. By 2014, just 3 short years later, there are now 124.6 million singles in America, representing over 50% of all US residents.
While the national population is fairly evenly split between men (49.5%) and women (50.5%) the singles demographic skews a bit more with women making up 53% of singles, and men only 47%. That means there are 86 unmarried men for every 100 unmarried women. But the definition of “single” is a bit vague…
